The Kinesis TELOS MicroPlate – Small but significant, simple yet sophisticated

October 2018 — In today’s bioanalytical laboratory, managing waste is a hot topic. We, as a human race, have to rationalise which consumables we use, whilst weighing up their practicality in everyday use. At Cole-Parmer we strive to consciously design our products, where possible, with both you and the environment in mind.

Working with small sample volumes of biological fluids requires an optimal and cost-effective solution. TELOS MicroPlate, which is comprised of a base-plate populated with individual wells, is a fine example of where design has successfully met the requirements of versatility, cost-effectiveness, high throughput and a reduction in sample loss. This is achieved through several key features including well design, collection plate and vacuum manifold compatibility, and modular flexibility.

Each well is consciously designed with a tapered outlet containing a sorbent and frit bed (10 - 15μl). This maximises analyte and sorbent interactions, keeping elution volumes to a minimum, which is particularly important for small sample volumes (≥100μl), ensuring minimal evaporation times prior to analysis by LC-MS/MS. The wells are populated into the base-plate, with an audibly secure ‘click’, of the TELOS MicroPlate, however, the amount used can be flexibly altered and varied according to the protocol being undertaken, whether this is a high throughput assay or for method development. Unrequired ports on the base-plate are isolated using sealing strips. Once the wells are in place, the outlets from the TELOS MicroPlate are designed in such a way as to give good collection plate penetration, preventing well to well cross-contamination.

Overall the format that the TELOS MicroPlate allows you to optimise your plate by matching the sample numbers to be processed. Its design minimises evaporation times, prevents cross-contamination, whilst improving throughput. It is made of small components designed with simplicity in mind, which fit together to create a sophisticated, and yet a cost-effective piece of technology that can significantly impact your protocols on a daily basis
